There is a tradition at MERI that happens every year on the last Sunday of September. Families are invited to Memphis, chairs are arranged, names are remembered, and for a few hours, the work of medical education pauses to make room for something more important — gratitude.

The 2016 Donor Appreciation Celebration, held on September 25th, brought together the families of Genesis donors whose loved ones had contributed to MERI’s program over the preceding year. It was an afternoon built not around presentations or statistics, but around people, and around the quiet acknowledgement that behind every donation is a human story worth honoring.

The celebration included a photo slideshow paying tribute to each donor, giving families the chance to see their loved one recognized by name and remembered with care. An overview of the medical education and training made possible throughout the year offered families a window into the real-world impact of their loved one’s gift.

The event also featured a dedicated veteran tribute, honoring the men and women who served their country in life and chose to continue serving through whole body donation in death.

By 2016, the Genesis program had grown from a small regional initiative into one that served donors across 19 states. The Donor Appreciation Celebration was a reminder of what drives that growth. Not the infrastructure or logistics, but the deep trust that families place in MERI, and the profound generosity of donors who choose to give one final, lasting gift.
