How to Donate Your Body to Science in North Carolina
You can pre-register for yourself whenever you are ready, or a legal authorizing party can start the process when a loved one passes. Here is the whole path, from first form to final return.
Fill out and sign the Genesis donor registration forms. You may register yourself, or sign as the legal authorizing party for someone you love.
When the time comes, your family calls Genesis. A real person picks up and gently guides them through what happens next.
Genesis arranges and pays for transportation from North Carolina to MERI in Memphis, and files the death certificate for you.
Your loved one stays in MERI’s care for roughly 6 to 12 months, where the gift supports hands-on medical education.
Afterward, the cremated remains are returned to your family, or laid to rest in a Memphis-area mausoleum, whichever you choose.
How North Carolina Donors Support Medical Education
MERI is a nonprofit bioskills facility in the heart of the Memphis Medical District, home to six bioskills labs. MERI does not run the courses itself. What it provides is the space, the donated tissue and the equipment that medical device companies, surgical societies and health systems rely on to lead their own hands-on training. Clinicians travel in from around the country to practice new techniques on donated tissue rather than on a living patient. That practice, quietly, is what your loved one’s gift makes possible.
North Carolina Donor Requirements
Most adults are able to donate. You need to be at least 18, and there is no upper age limit. Whether a gift can be accepted is determined at the time of passing and comes down to medical suitability, so registering ahead of time improves the chances without ever being a guarantee.
A donor needs to be free of infectious diseases that could put a learner at risk, and in a physical condition that allows for a safe, worthwhile learning experience.
Genesis serves families across North Carolina and 18 other states. MERI holds accreditation from the American Association of Tissue Banks and a license from the New York State Department of Health. In North Carolina, anatomical gifts are made under the Revised Uniform Anatomical Gift Act, found in Chapter 130A of the General Statutes, so any adult of sound mind may make the gift for medical education and research.

No-Cost Cremation
Through Genesis, the cremation process is fully no-cost, and so are transportation to Memphis and the death certificate.
